Stills from video are acceptable for use in e-mails, web sites, or small prints. Under ideal circumstances I have been able to print acceptable 8 x 10 portraits from video stills.
In the above images, I've made an extreme enlargement of a small portion of each image to show the difference in the amount of detail that can be seen.
While stills from video won't reveal the detail of digital still or film cameras, video can be ideal for capturing sequences that may be difficult to get in any other way.
Aside from greater detail, the main advantage of using a digital still camera is that I can shoot large quantities of digital photos without incurring the expense of processing film.
This means more choices of images for you.
For even higher quality still images, 35mm slide or negative film would be the best choice. While the initial costs may be higher, images can be reviewed on CD to minimize printing costs until you have selected your favourite images.
